Green Man Out April 27th

Front cover of The Green Man normal edition

The Green Man is finally getting it’s publication date, on April 27th 2025. It’s taken a long long time to get to this milestone, since first starting the book in 2017, and then putting it down, picking it up back up during the pandemic lockdown, and finally selling it to Stephen Games and the team at Envelope Books in 2023.

The book will initially be available in a trade paperback edition, ebook, and a special edition house style paperback. Stephen and I are working on producing an audiobook.

I’m immensely pleased with this piece of work. It’s taken me several years to bring it into the light, and is completely different to anything else I’ve done. Despite being set in the year 1367, it still has hallmarks of some of my other work, such as a coterie of grotesques, considerations about Christianity, how its light can be confounded by the darkness of the human spirit, and then shine all the brighter for all that, and the sense of characters being flung into circumstances and worlds they do not understand. In that respect, it’s not so different to Man O’War or The Hole In The Sky.

It also has certain semi-autobiograhical elements. It is, in part, a reflection of my own capacity to get things wrong. But it’s also about the capacity of humans to learn from their errors and turn towards the right path, and is a warning not to become ensnared in dogma. For me, I loved the characters, in all their flawed glory, and I hope you do too.

The Chronscast team – Bean, Peat, Brian and I – are planning on doing some a new series of episodes for Chronscast in the coming months, and I’m hoping we can do an episode about The Green Man. Peat and Bean both were beta readers and were hugely influential in helping me get over the line, so I’d love to talk about the book, how it came to be, and what it might mean, and what it might mean to others.

I'm a science fiction writer and podcaster. My debut novel Man O’War was published in 2018 by Snowbooks, and I’ve had a few short stories published here and there. I also host Chronscast, the official podcast of SFF Chronicles, the world's largest science-fiction and fantasy community. Away from writing I work for the UK Space Agency on a programme of space robotics for advanced satellite and planetary exploration technologies. All of which comes in rather handy when coming up with new ideas for science fiction stories.
